I just sold a simple prepay flip phone - brand new - still in factory clam shell packaging (the kind you need a chainsaw to get into). Buyer returned the phone stating it was used - already activated. I called Boost and they said it had been activated three months previous. On that (three months ago) date the phone - in it's factory sealed packaging - brand new - was in a storage bin in my closet. How was it activated? And why would anyone do that without the phone to use? I felt so bad for selling an already activated phone even though I have no idea how it was activated. The other strange thing is that I live in Michigan and the phone was activated in California. Edited by: LynnLou Treasures on Jan 25, 2016 5:32 PM. I have figured out the reason. First, we always sell FULLY PAID phone on Amazon, so the phone is always available to activate. Some country's carriers won't activate a stolen phone from another country because they are partners of sorts and share a blacklist. Some carriers. The service will be deactivated by the carrier; Your name & account info may be reported to the police as you are in possession of stolen property. Activating a stolen phone BEFORE it gets reported? Have already explained the consequences of trying to activate a lost or stolen phone. ![]() ![]() ![]() Customers buy phone, then they active the phone with their provider including ASURION insurance. After using 1 or 2 days or event 2 or 3 weeks, they will file a claim lost/stolen phone. For smartphone even the newest model, the maximum deductible fee is only $200. Finally, buyers return the phone to us under Amazon policy 30 days return and ask for refund. They officially get a new phone for only $200. Then they cancel service without ETF( early termination fee) because the phone is fully paid. What about us, the sellers. A a lot of trouble. If you don't check the IMEI, then you have to swallow your nothing more than a brick phone. If you check the IMEI, then you have to go to your provider or whatever store that you bought that phone to ask why your phone is reported lost. And you have to provide multiple evidences to show that your phone is clear by the time you sold it. I did not keep the receipt when I bought the phone. I didn't take picture of my IMEI on www.swappa.com the day I shipped the phone( it was clear at that time). So I will have to waste my time on this Friday to talk with Verizon at the store without knowing the result. Here are my advices to you guys: First: Keep all of the receipt of your phone. Second: check your IMEI with your provider before you ship the phone. Make sure to keep a copy of your conversation or you can go to the website then put in your IMEI and check. After that take a picture including the day and result. Third: take picture of your device before you send it.
